In the town of Isabela, the basic elements of nature come together in dramatic fashion along the beaches of Shacks and Bajuras. Just offshore, a network of caverns and corals forms a magical underwater playground. The caverns are no deeper than 40 feet, which means that the sun’s rays light your way through these underwater palaces, populated with tropical fish. They are the only beach- accessible underwater caves in Puerto Rico, outstanding for both snorkeling and scuba diving. Local dive operators host adventures through the caverns. Since it’s easy to get lost inside them, going alone is not a good idea. This is also an outstanding place for wind and kite surfing, but winds and currents can get strong, especially in winter, and you should rely on water sports operators for orientation as well as rentals. If you are a confirmed landlubber, arrange for a horseback riding tour of the coastline.
Like all of northwest Puerto Rico, Isabela has its share of renowned surfing beaches. Perhaps best known is Jobos Beach, site of numerous surfing competitions. In spite of the excellent surfing, Jobos and other beaches in Isabela, such as Montones and Sardina, also have areas that are ideal for bathing. How this came about makes a fascinating story for geology buffs. When the oceans were lower and the coastline extended farther out to sea, huge sand dunes lined the beaches. Over the eons, the ocean rose and the dunes slipped under water: what didn’t disintegrate hardened into the lunar like rocks you now see offshore. These rocks take the brunt of the ocean’s power and provide safe bathing pools.
At Jobos, you can climb to the top of one of the rocks and peer into a hole that overlooks the churning waves. This hole is known as El Pozo de Jacinto, named for an unfortunate lad who apparently fell into the hole one night when looking for his cow. Isabela has long been known for the sand dunes that remain along its coastline. Unfortunately, they have been reduced in recent years, for use in construction.
Another geological curiosity lies inland, in the limestone cliffs, caves, mounds and sinkholes that make up karst topography. Karst refers to porous limestone that has been sculpted by rainwater into these formations: in Puerto Rico, they are covered by an unruly mat of tropical plants and trees. You can wander on paths through the karst at the nearby Guajataca Forest off Road 446. While in the area, detour to Lake Guajataca, a mountain reservoir that is a favorite of local fishing enthusiasts.
Isabela proper reached by taking road 113, 112 or 466 from Highway 2, has a yesteryear appeal. The town has long know as a center for growing tobacco, raising paso fino horses, and making queso de hoja, a local mozzarella- like cheese. If you take the by-ways, you can still see some of the horse farms. But without a doubt, Isabelas’s biggest present-day attraction is its coastline.
